About the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD)
The German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD), funded by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research, is a national association that brings together experts in the field of diabetes research and combines basic research, translational research, epidemiology, and clinical applications.
The DZD was founded in 2009. Members are the German Diabetes Center in Düsseldorf, German Institute of Human Nutrition in Potsdam-Rehbrücke, Helmholtz Zentrum München – German Research Center for Environmental Health, the Paul Langerhans Institutes of Carl Gustav Carus University Hospital in Dresden and the Eberhard-Karls-University Tübingen, the Science Association Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres.
Interdisciplinary research with a novel integrative approach
With this network of excellent research institutions, modern biomedical technologies, and new methods and research approaches, the DZD seeks to make a major contribution to elucidating the pathogenesis of the disease. Furthermore, it wants to develop evidence-based prevention, make advances in prevention and healthcare research, and finally to develop individualized, causal therapies. For this reason, several different research groups are investigating the risk, development, course and treatment possibilities of diabetes from various perspectives.
The DZD was formally opened on November 9, 2010 by State Secretary Braun in Berlin.
"Alone in Germany around eight million people are affected by diabetes mellitus, and according to current estimates, just as many have undiagnosed diabetes or have a high diabetes risk", State Secretary Braun said in his speech in Berlin. "That is why it is of utmost importance that through the DZD, we create new perspectives for prevention, therapy and diagnosis of diabetes mellitus. Here all of the insights gained from research and practice are utilized for the optimal benefit of the patients".
