Research program

The German Center for Diabetes Research aims at developing individualized strategies for the early detection and prevention of the disease and its complications.

Furthermore, personalized causal therapies are being developed which should halt its progression and improve patient care. To this end, detailed research on the underlying causes of diabetes is of critical importance.
To reach this goal  scientists in the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) work hand in hand in joint network projects. Each of the DZD partner institutes also continues to carry out its own projects in line with its individual scientific expertise in different disciplines of diabetes research.

The network projects are assigned to one of four categories:

  • Clinical Trials/Clinical Application
  • Molecular Mechanisms
  • Epidemiology
  • Biology of the Beta Cell

The interaction of the partner institutes via a network-like, multidimensional integration of the individual subprojects enables an effective and efficient approach to achieving the research goals in the German Center for Diabetes Research.

Research program

Program A:
Clinical Trials/Clinical Applications

New prevention and treatment strategies for persons at risk and/or patients with diabetes mellitus are being developed in clinical trials.

Program B:
Molecular Mechanisms
The aim of this program is to develop new therapy approaches based on research into the molecular mechanisms of diabetes mellitus.

Program C:
Epidemiology
The effects of the environment, lifestyle and genes on the development of diabetes mellitus are examined in large population-based studies. New biomarkers shall improve the diagnosis of diabetes in the future.

Program D:
Biology of the Beta Cell
Maintaining or restoring the activity of the beta cells, which produce insulin in the body, is crucial to prevent the occurrence of diabetes.
