DZD News

Physician and DZD researcher Prof. Antje Körner has been elected as a new member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Leipzig. On April 10, 2026, she was officially admitted to the Academy’s Mathematical and Natural Sciences Class during its public spring meeting.

The election is an important distinction for nationally and internationally recognized scientists whose research has made a significant contribution to advancing knowledge in their field.

“Being appointed to this traditional and prestigious learned society is an extraordinary honor and recognition for me. I am delighted to be accepted and look forward to supporting the Academy's work in interdisciplinary scientific exchange and, in particular, to advancing vitally important research for and with children. This will help children and adolescents to enjoy greater benefits from scientific and clinical progress at an earlier stage and in a more targeted manner,” says Antje Körner.

Research on Childhood Obesity and Health

Antje Körner leads the “Childhood Obesity and Metabolic Research” group at the Helmholtz Institute for Metabolism, Obesity and Vascular Research (HI-MAG) at Helmholtz Munich and is Professor of Metabolism Research at the Faculty of Medicine at Leipzig University.

As a pediatrician and researcher, she has made key contributions to advancing research into the causes and consequences of childhood obesity. Her work follows a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to studying the complex determinants of the disease and their metabolic consequences. She aims to improve the understanding of the mechanisms in order to identify a high risk of the disease more precisely and in a more targeted manner and develop individual treatment options. Antje Körner contributes to the topics of “Obesity” and “Early Determinants of Health and Disease” as co-speaker for the Leipzig Center of Metabolism (LeiCeM) cluster of excellence as well as site spokesperson for Leipzig/Dresden at the German Center for Child and Adolescent Health (DZKJ) and as head of LIFE Child.
