People at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, such as those who are overweight, have varying degrees of risk of developing the disease and its complications. DZD researchers have examined various subgroups more closely. The results show that the new classification of diabetes risk subtypes can help to identify people who benefit particularly greatly from bariatric surgery. This might be an important step towards precision medicine.
Key findings of the study:
- High-risk subgroups 5 and 6 benefited more from bariatric surgery in terms of insulin resistance, beta-cell function and prediabetes remission.
- This study is perhaps able to help advance precision medicine in people at increased risk of type 2 diabetes and obesity.
