The exhibition was designed for all age groups and featured a varied, interactive format: Three themed stations and a separate diabetes simulation allowed visitors to explore the topic in a way that was both fun and scientifically sound. This made diabetes research a hands-on experience—for children, teenagers, and adults alike.
From organ to cell: Insights into metabolism
The first station focused on the metabolic organs, particularly the pancreas. With the help of vivid cell and organ models, a modeling station, a human body model, and the interactive activity “Build a Pancreas,” visitors were able to get up close and personal. In the process, they learned about the functions of different cell types and gained a better understanding of how key organs interact in metabolism.
Blood sugar in balance: Understanding diabetes
The second station focused on the different types of diabetes and blood sugar regulation. An experiment on blood sugar regulation sparked particular interest: children, dressed in lab coats, were able to step into the role of researchers themselves. Using colored solutions, the experiment clearly demonstrated how the body maintains a constant blood sugar level and the crucial role the hormone insulin plays in this process.
The program was rounded off with age-appropriate educational games, such as variations of Memory and Bondolino, which teach about diabetes and metabolism. In addition, visitors had the chance to explore original materials from the daily life of a person with type 1 diabetes—an impressive glimpse into daily diabetes management.
Discovering prevention in a playful way
The third station focused on environmental factors, nutrition, and prevention. In the game “Sugar Detectives,” participants estimated the sugar content of various foods and then checked their estimates. A magnetic model of the digestive tract illustrated the individual stages of digestion, while an interactive food pyramid encouraged participants to categorize foods correctly and learn more about a balanced diet.
Research in dialogue
In addition to the interactive stations, current topics in diabetes research were presented—including precision medicine, stem cell research, and organoids. Posters and microscope slides provided insights into modern research approaches. Many guests found the direct exchange with the young scientists, who explained their work and answered questions, particularly valuable.

With its wide range of offerings, the exhibition impressively demonstrated how even complex scientific topics can be presented in a way that is both accessible and engaging. “Focus on Diabetes” highlighted the importance of research for understanding and preventing diabetes—and how much fun it can be to explore science for yourself.
