DZD-HeaDS: New Certificate Program for Health Data Science and AI to Launch in 2026

DZD News

With its new DZD-HeaDS (Health Data Science & AI) certificate program, the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) is launching an innovative qualification program for master students and doctoral candidates. The aim is to inspire early career scientists to pursue data-driven health research and to promote specific skills in the areas of AI, data analysis, and digital health.

Data literacy for tomorrow's health research

Modern diabetes research benefits from the analysis of large and complex health data sets. Artificial intelligence (AI) and data science methods offer new opportunities to better understand disease progression and develop personalized strategies for prevention and treatment. With DZD-HeaDS, the DZD aims to bring together talented individuals from various disciplines – from the life and natural sciences to computer science and epidemiology – and provide them with practical training.

“We need young researchers who combine medical knowledge with data science expertise,” says Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Martin Hrabĕ de Angelis, member of the DZD Board of Directors. “Only then can we fully exploit the potential of AI and big data for the prevention and treatment of diabetes.”

Program structure and content

The two-year certificate program uses a series of workshops that build on each other to teach the entire process from data collection to the development of innovative health technologies. The focus is on practical topics such as health data infrastructures, data standardization according to FAIR principles*, and methods of machine learning and artificial intelligence. The curriculum is supplemented by units on epidemiological models and starting a business based on academic research.

A special highlight: Participants work with real-world data in the research environment of the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) and have the opportunity to actively participate in current research projects.

The continuing education program is funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space (BMFTR). Participation is free of charge. Travel and accommodation costs can be covered for in-person events.

The program is run by an interdisciplinary team of experts:

  • Prof. Dr.  Dr. h.c. Martin Hrabĕ de Angelis (Project Manager, Member of the DZD Board of Directors, Research Director, and Scientific Director (acting), Helmholtz Munich)
  • Prof. Dr. Reiner Jumpertz-von Schwartzenberg (Head of the Study Center, University Hospital Tübingen)
  • Dr. Sebastian Lobentanzer und Dr. Steffen Schneider (Computational Health Center, Helmholtz Munich)
  • Dr. Lars Oest (Head DZD Data Management)

They contribute their expertise in clinical research, data analysis, AI methods, and data infrastructures.

The program is completed by exclusive expert talks with leading representatives from science and healthcare, as well as a concluding hackathon, where real data problems are solved creatively.

Application and admission

The program is aimed at master's and doctoral students from natural sciences, health sciences, data sciences, and engineering programs in Europe. The application phase is open until December 15, 2025.
