Under the motto of “Revolution of Means—Reality of People,” more than 6,000 experts from research, clinical practice, and healthcare are expected to attend the DDG Diabetes Congress. They will have the opportunity to exchange ideas in symposia, workshops, poster presentations, and free lectures and receive further training on specific topics.
DZD Symposia: The Latest Developments in Diabetes Research
At the congress, the DZD will contribute its interdisciplinary expertise and address central challenges of translational diabetes research and modern diabetology—including in the four DZD symposia. The topics are:
Organ Crosstalk in the Development of Prediabetes and Type 2 Diabetes
Wednesday, May 13, 2026, 3:15 p.m.
Chaired by DZD researchers Prof. Dr. Robert Wagner and Prof. Dr. Heike Vogel, the symposium will shed light on the interaction of various organ systems in the early pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes and identify new approaches for prevention and therapy.
Personalized Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment of MASLD—Future Vision or Reality?
Thursday, May 14, 2026, 8:30 a.m.
The focus will be on advances in personalized medicine in metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and its close link to diabetes and obesity. The symposium will be chaired by Prof. Dr. Micheal Roden and Prof. Dr. Jochen Seufert.
Beta Cell Replacement Therapies—Opportunities and Risks
Thursday, May 14, 2026, 4:00 p.m.
Chaired by Prof. Dr. Barbara Ludwig and Prof. Dr. Jochen Seufert, the symposium will focus on innovative cell-based therapeutic approaches and their clinical potential as well as ethical, immunological, and safety-related aspects.
Cancer Prevention in Diabetes
Saturday, May 16, 2026, 10:45 a.m.
Chaired by Prof. Dr. Stephan Herzig and Dr. Alba Sulaj, the symposium will focus on the higher incidence of cancer in people with diabetes and strategies for improved prevention and early detection.
Events for Young Talents: DZD NEXT Networking and Data Workshop
The DZD NEXT networking event for emerging researchers and young clinicians in diabetes research will take place shortly before the Diabetes Congress (May 12). The focus is on short 3–5-minute project pitches in which current research work, project ideas, or open research questions are presented. Afterwards, participants will have the opportunity to discuss methods, career paths, and cooperation approaches as well as to talk to members of the DZD Patients’ Advisory Board to find out more about their concerns and issues.
Research Without Data Chaos
The DZD will also be active in the program of the DDG’s Young Investigators working group at the Diabetes Congress. On May 14 from 8:30 a.m., under the motto “Data done right: research without data chaos”, DZD data experts will explain how to generate high-quality and sustainably usable research data from the outset. Based on best practices, typical challenges will be discussed and methods for effective data management will be tried out.
DZD Booth: Research in Dialog
Visitors to the congress can find out more about the work of the German Center for Diabetes Research at the DZD booth. There, they can obtain information about DZD partners, clinical studies, the young scientists program, and translational diabetes research. The stand also offers space for exchange and networking with DZD scientists.
The diabetes information portal diabinfo.de will also be represented at the stand. The portal offers scientifically proven information on all forms of diabetes mellitus as well as on the prevention of type 2 diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular diseases. diabinfo.de is a joint service of Helmholtz Munich, the German Diabetes Center (DDZ) in Düsseldorf and the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD).
