At the kick-off, the 30 trainees will convene for the first time in order to get know each other and gain insight into the research landscape at the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD). The workshop will provide an overview of the goals, content, and structure of the two-year continuing education program as well as the main research topics and data infrastructure of the DZD.
Prof. Dr. Martin Hrabě de Angelis will provide an overview of the DZD’s research activities. The DZD board member and member and spokesperson of the Executive Board (acting) at Helmholtz Munich will present the structure of the DZD and main research topics as well as the close interrelationship between basic research, translational research, and clinical application.
Career Paths in Health Data Science
The trainees will also gain insight into current developments in health data science and possible career paths in this dynamic field of research. Dr. Sebastian Lobentanzer (Helmholtz Munich) is one of the DZD HeaDS workshop leaders. In his “Career Journeys in Health Data Science” talk, he will present his career path from studying pharmacy to health data science and will be available as a role model to offer advice and answer questions.
Keynote on the Role of AI in Health Research
A particular highlight is the keynote by Prof. Dr. Dr. Fabian Theis, Head of the Computational Health Center at Helmholtz Munich. In his lecture “AI-Powered Insights into Cellular Niches and Disease Mechanisms,” he will contextualize the importance of data science and artificial intelligence in understanding the development of diseases and modern health research.
Networking and Community-Building
“Besides expert insight into health data science and data-driven research, the focus is also on networking and community-building,” explains Dr. Leonie Hermann, project coordinator for the Health Data Science & AI certificate program. “A particular highlight is the launch of the buddy and peer-mentoring program. It will support participants throughout the program and promote the mutual exchange of experiences.”
The kick-off meeting will lay the foundation for the upcoming modules in which participants will engage intensively with the use of health data, modern analysis methods using AI and machine learning, and the translation of research results into clinical applications. The DZD HeaDS program is thus making an important contribution to the qualification of specialists for responsible, future-oriented health data research.
DZD Health Data Science & AI Certificate Program (DZD HeaDS)
DZD HeaDS is a two-year continuing education program offered by Helmholtz Munich and the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) to qualify STEM students and young scientists in data-driven health research. In a modular curriculum with project work, participants will acquire skills in the collection, analysis, and innovative use of health data within an interdisciplinary research environment.
