More than 8.800 Visitors at the BMFTR Open House

DZD News

Two days full of interest, discussion, and commitment to diabetes prevention: The German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) was represented at the open house of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMFTR) over the weekend with its interactive booth and a lecture.

Under the motto “Prevention is better than cure,” the DZD provided information on current research findings on the preliminary phase of type 2 diabetes (prediabetes) and showed how targeted measures can reduce personal risk of developing the disease.

Hands-on research: Prediabetes subtypes visually explained

Over 8,800 visitors, including many families with children, took the opportunity to learn about the six subtypes of pre-diabetes. Life-size cardboard figures with easy-to-understand descriptions illustrated the differences and risks of each subtype.

Great interest in hands-on activities

The interactive activities at the DZD booth were particularly popular:

The German Diabetes Risk Test (DIfE): Hundreds of visitors determined their personal risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the next ten years – scientifically based and with individual recommendations for reducing risk.

The sugar quiz: Children and adults enthusiastically puzzled over how much sugar is really in ketchup, breakfast cereals, or chocolate. The surprising answers provided many “aha” moments.

Research live: Lecture by Dr. Astrid Glaser

A special highlight was the lecture given by Dr. Astrid Glaser, Managing Director of the DZD, on Sunday. Under the title “Stopping diabetes before it starts – with knowledge from research,” she presented current findings on the path to personalized medicine and actively involved the audience.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to:

  • Federal Minister Dorothee Bär for her interest in our research
  • the BMFTR for the excellent organization
  • all visitors for their great interest, questions, and commitment
  • everyone who took part in the sugar quiz and completed the risk test
