German Centers for Health Research (DZG)

The German Centers for Health Research (DZG) have set themselves the goal of accelerating the transfer of research findings into medical practice. This process, which is known as translation, is the central focus of the DZGs. The aim is to better detect and more effectively treat and prevent widespread diseases, such as diabetes, infections, lung diseases, cancer, cardiovascular, neurodegenerative and mental diseases.

In the DZGs, the federal government and states have established powerful centers with long-term funding. These centers connect non-university research institutions with universities and university hospitals.

The DZGs

8 centers, 43 sites, 14 federal states, 104 partner institutes—the DZGs are:

  • German Cancer Consortium (DKTK)
  • German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD)
  • German Center for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK)
  • German Center for Infection Research (DZIF)
  • German Center for Lung Research (DZL)
  • German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE)
  • German Center for Mental Health (DZPG)
  • German Center for Child and Adolescent Health (DZKJ) (in German)

Joint Research for Better Health

Widespread diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular disease or cancer often have similar causes. To gain a better understanding of them and identify important relationships, the German Centers for Health Research (DZG) implement joint scientific projects. Particularly promising and pioneering projects involving at least three DZGs are financed by the DZG Innovation Fund.

Cooperation for Greater Impact

The DZGs work closely together in order to exchange knowledge and reinforce each other. They exploit synergies, establish successful cooperation structures and offer joint activities. These are carried out in areas such as global health, promotion of young talents, public relations, patient participation,

clinical studies, data management and biobanks. Strategic planning is carried out by the DZG Board, while coordination is handled by the DZG head office.

All working groups and activities of the DZGs are described in detail on the website deutschezentren.de.

Successful and Comprehensible Communication

Under the motto “Research for Health,” the DZGs report on projects and successes in translational research in their SYNERGIE magazine. The magazine is published in print and online versions and has received the Berlin Type Award and iF Design Award. Further information about the German Centers can also be found at deutschezentren.de, the deutsche_zentren Instagram account or on LinkedIn.

International Visibility

Strategic cooperation between leading researchers at the DZGs strengthens Germany as a scientific location in international competition and simultaneously boosts its appeal to young talents at home and abroad. Bringing together various disciplines and competences has already significantly increased the international visibility of translational, clinical application-oriented research in Germany.
