Large Crowd of Visitors at the 15th Diabetes Day in Düsseldorf
Nutrition, exercise, therapy, technologies, diabetes in childhood and adolescence, and diabetes complications: On Saturday September 30, 2017, visitors crowded into the lecture halls and around the exhibition stands in the Düsseldorf Chamber of Crafts and Skilled Trades. Under the theme "New Therapy Concepts and Technologies", Professor Michael Roden, member of the executive board of the German Diabetes Center, Professor Andreas Meyer-Falcke, commissioner for Health of the state capital Düsseldorf, and Martin Hadder, chairman of the NRW state association of German Diabetes Aid - People with Diabetes, opened the 15th Düsseldorf Diabetes Day.
Experts from the DZD partner German Diabetes Center (DDZ), from Düsseldorf University Hospital as well as specialists from diabetology practices and other organizations presented new forms of treatment, current developments and new findings in diabetes research. The Düsseldorf Diabetes Day was held for the 15th time and offered numerous visitors a wide range of events, including lectures, an industrial exhibition and a number of individual screening tests. For the patron of the event, Professor Andreas Meyer-Falcke, “the Düsseldorf Diabetes Day has for years been a fixed institution as a health day. It functions successfully for all those involved and strengthens Düsseldorf's role as a health center in the region."
“Every year, Düsseldorf's Diabetes Day offers visitors an ideal opportunity to find out more about current diabetes research through lectures, individual discussions with experts and information material from exhibitors,” said Professor Michael Roden, member of the DDZ executive board, in his speech. Various individual measurement tests and counseling services were available free of charge to those affected and interested families and friends. Numerous measurements of blood pressure, HbA1C-value, lipid values and many more tests were carried out in the Diabetes-Info-Mobile of the NRW state association of German Diabetes Aid – People with Diabetes (DDH-M). The determination of the cholesterol level was offered at the stand of the North Rhine Pharmacists’ Association. In addition, experts were available for individual foot care consultation.
Testimonials of experiences in which people with diabetes described their lives enriched the wide-ranging lecture program with a personal touch. The reports dealt with various facets of the disease, e.g. "Diabetes in Childhood and Adolescence". In addition to the information stands of the more than 30 exhibitors and the lectures, visitors were also offered a varied supporting program. Over the course of the day, DAK Gesundheit organized an interactive show cooking session with TV chef Alexander Wahl. For the first time, a food truck was added to the range of culinary offerings, which included seasonal salads, fresh burgers and other tasty food made from regional and sustainable products. The attending children were delighted with the kids’ entertainment program provided by IKK Classic.
The information day was jointly organized by the Regional Innovation Network Diabetes, the DDZ, the Clinic for Endocrinology and Diabetology at Düsseldorf University Hospital, the state association of DDH-M NRW Germany as well as the Düsseldorf diabetologists in private practice and the Düsseldorf Chamber of Crafts and Skilled Trades.
