Artificial intelligence (AI) is an important tool in medical research that is increasingly being used in clinical applications: it opens up new opportunities to better identify, understand and treat diseases. For example, AI can analyse complex data sets (big data) in the shortest possible time and support more precise diagnoses and personalized treatment approaches. The DZG use AI and big data in a variety of ways and is continuously gaining new insights. In this issue, we report on the latest successes of our translational health research.
You can read the articles - in German language only - in the new SYNERGIE individually on the website(https://dzg-magazin.de/) or in the layout in the e-reader(https://dzg-magazin.de/e-reader-ausgabe-2-2024/). For a haptic experience, you can subscribe to the print edition.
Highlights of the fall 2024 edition
- “The swarm”: The German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) uses a global network to search for patterns in thousands of patient data with the help of AI.
- “Measuring the lungs”: The Human Lung Cell Atlas, in which the German Center for Lung Research (DZL) is significantly involved, integrates numerous data sets into a comprehensive atlas of the lungs.
- “Seismograph for symptoms”: The German Center for Mental Health (DZPG) is researching how biomarkers can serve as indicators of mental illness.
- “Big data”: researchers at the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) use extensive data sets to gain new insights into diabetes and develop more precise diagnoses and more targeted therapies.
- “Doctor AI”: Prof. Jens Kleesiek from the German Consortium for Translational Cancer Research (DKTK) explains in an interview how AI supports oncology, improves cancer prevention and enables personalized therapies.
- “Circuit training for AI”: Researchers at the German Center for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK) have developed circuit training for AI algorithms to boost their performance.
- “Tracking down pathogens”: Computer models are used at the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF) to find new antivirals and to assess the danger posed by bacteria.
- “A healthy life right from the start”: The German Center for Child and Adolescent Health (DZKJ), the youngest member of the DZG, strengthens research in the field of pediatric and adolescent medicine.
About SYNERGIE
“Research for Health” - under this motto, the German Centers for Health Research publish the SYNERGIE magazine twice a year and report on projects and successes in translational research.

About the German Centers for Health Research
The main aim of the Federal Government's health research program is to combat particularly common diseases - the widespread diseases - more effectively. By establishing the DZG as long-term, equal partnerships between non-university research institutions and universities and university hospitals, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the federal states are creating the conditions for this. Several thousand researchers, clinical researchers and doctors are working in one of Germany's largest health research networks to bring medical progress to patients faster - across research disciplines and organizations.
