DDG Diabetes Congress 2023: “Diversity & Individuality – Rethinking Diabetes”

Under the banner “Diversity & Individuality – Rethinking Diabetes”, the 57th annual conference of the German Diabetes Association (DDG) will take place in Berlin from May 17 to 20, 2023. Researchers from the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) will also present their latest research findings. The featured topics from the DZD will include new approaches for precise therapies and diabetes prevention.

Every year, around 7000 physicians, researchers, non-medical members, and interested parties come together at the Diabetes Congress. Over the three and a half days, specialists from the fields of research, practice, industry, and science have the opportunity to exchange ideas at symposiums, workshops, poster presentations, and free lectures and to educate themselves further on specialist topics. The Diabetes Congress 2023 is a hybrid event that will take place both in Berlin and online.

DZD Symposium on Personalized Therapies
Finding the right treatment at the right time for different patient groups is the aim of precision medicine. On Saturday morning, from 9 am until 10:30 am, DZD researchers will provide information on the extent to which diabetes mellitus can today be treated using precision medicine, while simultaneously preventing the complications of diabetes, at a symposium chaired by DZD speakers Prof. Andreas Birkenfeld and Prof. Annette Schürmann.

During their lectures, they will present their latest findings on the remission of prediabetes, evolutionary principles of beta cell regeneration and networking, and the mechanisms of action of dual agonists newly introduced into therapy. Furthermore, Congress attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about prediabetes subtypes and type 2 diabetes. Those who wish to find out more will be able to pose questions about the DZD and its research at our exhibition stand.

Further DZD symposiums will focus on the following themes:

  • Development and prevention of type 2 diabetes: new mechanisms from the mouse model
    Thurs., 18.05.2023, 8:30 am - 10:00 am
  • Proteomics: new insights into the pathogenesis of diabetes and its complications

Thurs., 18.05.2023, 04:00 pm - 05:30 pm

  • Organ communication during the development of type 2 diabetes and complications
    Fri., 19.05.2023, 04:00 pm - 05:30 pm

Honors and Prizes for Six Researchers from the DZD
The exceptional quality of research at the DZD is again reflected in this year’s DDG awards ceremony.  At the Diabetes Congress, the scientific society will honor several DZD researchers.

PD Dr. Timo Müller is the recipient of the Werner Creutzfeldt Prize. He works at Helmholtz Center Munich on new targets for the development of medication to treat obesity and type 2 diabetes, among other topics. The prize honors medical and scientific researchers for exceptional work in the field of pathophysiology and diabetes mellitus therapy.

The winner of the Friedrich Arnold Gries Prize is Prof. Norbert Stefan. He heads the Department of Pathophysiology of Prediabetes at the Institute of Diabetes Research and Metabolic Diseases of the Helmholtz Centre Munich at the University of Tubingen. In recent years, his work has focused on the causes and consequences of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The prize is awarded for exceptional, state-of-the-art, and innovative work in the field of micro- and macrovascular complications of diabetes.

Another award recipient is PD Dr. Katharina Warncke, Senior Physician at the Center for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine – a cooperation between Munich Clinic and TUM University Hospital Rechts der Isar and researchers at the Institute for Diabetes Research at Helmholtz Munich. She is the winner of the Ernst Friedrich Pfeiffer Prize, which recognizes scientific work and ground-breaking achievements in the fields of etiology and the treatment of type 1 diabetes.

Dr. Alba Sulaj from University Hospital Heidelberg is this year’s recipient of the Silvia King Prize from DDG, awarded for her work in the field of clinical diabetology. Also, the researchers Elli Polemiti from the German Institute of Human Nutrition and Kálmán Bódis from the German Diabetes Center are each the recipient of a doctoral thesis prize.
