Norbert Stefan Receives Werner Creutzfeldt Prize

Professor Norbert Stefan of University Hospital Tübingen has been awarded the 2017 Werner Creutzfeld Prize of the German Diabetes Association for his outstanding research work on the “identification of phenotypes of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes for a better understanding of diabetes mellitus and the implementation of innovative prevention and therapy concepts”.

The Werner Creutzfeld Prize, which is endowed with 10,000 euros by Lilly Deutschland, was presented to him at the 2017 Annual Meeting of the German Diabetes Association at the end of May in Hamburg. The prize is awarded to researchers in medicine and science for outstanding research in the field of pathophysiology and therapy of diabetes mellitus, with a particular focus on “gastrointestinal hormones”.

Since 2011 Norbert Stefan has held the Chair and W3-Heisenberg Professorship for Clinical Experimental Diabetology at the Department of Medicine, Internal Medicine IV at University Hospital Tübingen and has been head of the Department of Pathophysiology of Prediabetes of the Institute of Diabetes Research and Metabolic Diseases (IDM) of Helmholtz Zentrum München at the University of Tübingen. His research activities focus on elucidating the causes, consequences and treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Here, in particular, the study of the action of the incretin hormone GLP-1 has become increasingly important. Furthermore, his research focuses on the role of hepatokines, in particular fetuin-A, in the metabolism, the elucidation of metabolically healthy obesity, and phenotype-based prevention and therapy concepts in type 2 diabetes and its sequelae.
