Research program

The overall objective of the DZD is to swiftly transfer research results into medical practice in order to provide faster benefit to patients. With its research program, the DZD strengthens its translational approach in diabetes research. The program is divided into six research areas that are closely linked:

  • Epidemiology and Health Care Research
  • Molecular Mechanisms
  • Langerhans Islets and Beta Cells
  • Clinical Trials
  • Autoimmunity and Type 1 Diabetes
  • New Therapeutic Concepts

DZD Academies

The DZD conducts interdisciplinary research projects to address the most urgent questions in diabetes research. What is the effect of the liver or brain on diabetes? How do environmental factors such as diet affect the activity of genes? How can beta cells be protected? What other diseases are associated with diabetes?
To investigate these questions, the DZD is establishing academies on the following topics:

  • Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver and Diabetes
  • Role of the Brain in Diabetes
  • Genetic and Epigenetic Influence on Diabetes
  • Preservation and Regeneration of Beta Cells
  • Diabetes Sequelae

Research Infrastructures

The DZD has numerous research infrastructures at its disposal, such as biomaterial banks, the DZD Computational Core Unit, genotyping and phenotyping technology, omics technologies, model systems, the German Diabetes Mouse Clinic, the Human Islet Biobank, the DZD Clinical Trials Platform and Cohorts.
