External Evaluation Confirms the DZD's Excellent Development

DZD News

Excellent rating for the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD): The latest external evaluation attests to the DZD’s clear scientific vision, “outstanding” research, highly effective organizational and governance structures, and the successful and rapid transfer of findings from diabetes research into patient care.

The close collaboration between university and non-university research institutions, as well as the strong interdisciplinary networking within the DZD, were rated particularly positively.

With its vision of “Research for a Future Without Diabetes,” the DZD is pursuing a compelling and highly relevant goal for society.

The report also highlights the high level of scientific excellence among the researchers and the center’s strong national and international visibility.

Translation as a particular strength

The Evaluation Commission cites the DZD’s successful translation concept as a particular strength. The reviewers commend the DZD’s ability to effectively translate research findings into the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diabetes. Examples include contributions to national and international guidelines, the development of new therapeutic approaches, and successful collaborations with industry partners.

The DZD’s organizational and decision-making structures are also rated very positively. In particular, the structure of the Translational Research Academies is considered a successful approach to bringing together different disciplines and promoting innovative research.

The evaluation also acknowledges the DZD’s impressive progress since the last review. This is reflected, in particular, in rising publication numbers, successful acquisition of third-party funding, patents, and the expansion of international collaborations. The evaluation also highlights data management, the promotion of innovative research projects, the involvement of citizens and patients, and the recruitment of early-career researchers and leading scientists.

Building on success together

“The outstanding assessment by the international evaluation committee is a striking confirmation of the DZD’s successful development and the high quality of our research,” says DZD Executive Board Member Professor Martin Hrabě de Angelis. “We are particularly pleased about the recognition of our translational approach, which specifically translates scientific findings into the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diabetes. This result is a joint achievement of our scientists and all partners within the DZD.” The DZD will act on the reviewers’ recommendations to further expand its translational research program and successfully advance research toward a future without diabetes.
