IFIS

The IFIS (Intermittent Fasting to Improve Insulin Secretion) study aims to investigate the effect of intermittent fasting on insulin secretion in people with prediabetes and diabetes and an increased risk of secondary diseases.

The study is being carried out at several locations across Germany.

The prediabetes part is completed. Only patients with diabetes will be included in the study.

Background of the Study:

Previous clinical studies have shown the beneficial effects of intermittent fasting on weight loss and metabolism. Now the effect of intermittent fasting on blood glucose metabolism and body fat content is to be examined in detail.

Suitable Participants:

  • Men and women between the ages of 18 and 70 years
  • Elevated blood glucose levels, but not yet diabetes (prediabetes), or
  • Newly manifested type 2 diabetes (diagnosis <5 years)
  • No therapy with insulin or glitazones (with other diabetes therapy a "washout period" is necessary)

Course of the Study:

The duration of the study is approximately 6 weeks, during which the participants are either instructed to follow a standard diet or to lose weight according to the principle of intermittent fasting. A follow-up examination is planned after 6 months.

The participants will receive detailed metabolic examinations as well as scientifically based dietary counseling from specialist staff.
