Statement of the German Diabetes Association (DDG) on the status of research and clinical application of stem cells for the treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus

Patients and their relatives repeatedly ask treating physicians and the German Diabetes Association (DDG) whether type 1 diabetes mellitus or other types of diabetes can be treated with stem cells. The background to these inquiries is the hope that the use of stem cells could "cure" diabetes mellitus by restoring the body's own insulin production and secretion. On this occasion, the DDG comments on research and therapy of diabetes mellitus with regard to the use of stem cells.
