As one of the pioneers and coordinators of the Genetics and Epigenetics research focus at the German Center for Diabetes Research, he made significant contributions to our understanding of the role of genetic and epigenetic factors, as well as the impact of lifestyle, in the development of type 2 diabetes, thereby opening up new perspectives for prevention and treatment. Together with the DZD researchers at the various locations, he has built this field into a successful and important translational pillar of the DZD.
Johannes Beckers was convinced that scientific progress thrives on open exchange, and he was committed to fostering scientific dialogue both nationally and internationally. He was not only an exceptionally valued professional contact but also, as a person, very approachable, open, helpful, and always willing to share his knowledge. Many of us will especially remember the wonderful, inspiring, and often humorous conversations we had with him at the DZD workshops.
“Johannes Beckers played a decisive role in shaping research at the DZD since the center’s founding. For many of us, he was a reliable advisor, an inspiring mentor, and a colleague who treated others with great openness and helpfulness. He will leave a huge void at the DZD. At the same time, his ideas, his work, and his dedication to science will live on at the DZD,” says Martin Hrabě de Angelis, a member of the DZD Executive Board and a longtime close colleague of Johannes Beckers.
Our thoughts are with his family, his loved ones, and everyone who was close to Johannes. We share in their grief and will remember him with gratitude as a colleague, companion, and friend.
With heartfelt sorrow and deep gratitude,
The colleagues at the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD)
