DIfE: Successful First Open Day at the Gerty Cori House

The DZD partner German Institute of Human Nutrition (DIfE) opened the doors of its state-of-the-art research building, the Gerty Cori House (GCH), to the public for the first time on December 2. Around 200 visitors took the opportunity to take a tour of the new human study center and the biobank, attend scientific presentations and find out about the institute's latest research findings.

The institute is surrounded by snow and the temperatures are below zero as Dr. Birgit Schröder-Smeibidl, Administrative Director of DIfE, welcomes guests to the first open day in the Gerty Cori House. "I am delighted that you have all come to visit our new research building and gain an insight into our work. We have prepared a varied program for you." This was followed by a welcome address from Dr. Christoph Löwer, the deputy of the district of Potsdam-Mittelmark. As the person responsible for the departments of Agriculture and Health, Building and Environment, the agricultural engineer emphasized the importance of DIfE's research in the field of health for the region in his speech.

Various program for young and old
Afterwards, visitors had the opportunity to listen to four exciting lectures by DIfE scientists or to take part in a guided tour of the Human Study Center and the biobank or the building control system to gain a deeper insight into how DIfE works. In addition, numerous laboratory stations and hands-on activities provided interactive experiences. For example, the visitors could isolate and visualize their own DNA, have their body composition determined using non-invasive bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) or try out virtual reality goggles.

In addition, many took the opportunity to find out about the various career opportunities and working at DIfE or to take a look through the architect's glasses. For the youngest visitors, there was a children's table with coloring pictures, puzzles and magnetic games on the subject of nutrition.

Intriguing questions and attractive prizes
The researcher rally was also very popular. Equipped with pens and questionnaires, young and old alike searched for the right answers to the tricky questions at the various stations. The challenge was to answer all the questions correctly in order to take part in the tombola and be in with a chance of winning one of the attractive prizes. The draw at 13:35 was the highlight of the event for many. The main prizes included a book voucher, the DIfE chronicle and gourmet packages from the delicatessen. The winners were thrilled. To ensure that no one went away empty-handed, all other lottery participants were also able to choose a little something afterwards. It was over shortly afterwards. Dr. Ina Henkel, Head of Press and Public Relations, was impressed by the great interest shown by visitors: "The event was a complete success! I am delighted that so many people took the opportunity to experience the world of nutrition research up close. We will be opening our doors again next year."
