The German Diabetes Center (DDZ) is an interdisciplinary research institution which links molecular and cell biological basic research with clinical and epidemiological research approaches. The mission of the DDZ is to develop new approaches to prevention, early detection and diagnosis of diabetes mellitus. Furthermore, the DDZ seeks to improve both diabetes therapy and the treatment of its complications as well as the epidemiological data.

• Organization and development of the German Diabetes Study on the course of diabetes and its long-term complications
• Development and evaluation of new methods for the characterization of diabetes and its long-term complications
• Epidemiology and prediction of diabetes using biomarkers in large cohort studies
• Studies on the role of inflammation, energy metabolism and mitochondrial function in the individual response to preventive and therapeutic measures
