At a Glance: Online Guide to Diabetes Offerings in Düsseldorf

Around one million people with type 2 diabetes currently live in North Rhine-Westphalia. In addition, there is a high number of unreported cases. According to calculations by the scientists at the DZD partner German Diabetes Center, the number of people affected will continue to increase. This online guide of the Regional Innovation Network (RIN) Diabetes provides a quick and easy overview of relevant offerings in Düsseldorf and the surrounding area.

It is often difficult for people with diabetes to find information about relevant offerings in their immediate vicinity. The RIN Diabetes aims to close this gap and offers patients, family members and the interested public an online guide to diabetes mellitus. With this guide, relevant offerings in Düsseldorf and the surrounding area can be found quickly and easily on the Internet. “The online guide (www.rin-diabetes.de/wegweiser) provides a clear overview of information on doctors, counseling centers, self-help groups and prevention services," said Dr. Olaf Spörkel, head of RIN Diabetes. The spectrum of topics ranges from prevention, diet, and exercise to individual treatment and counseling offerings. “The retrieval of the information is free of charge and does not require registering in advance,” added Spörkel, illuminating the advantages of the guide.Bürger kostenlos und ohne Anmeldung möglich“,

“Conversations with patients show that the Internet is increasingly being used as a source of information. With the knowledge and competence platform of RIN Diabetes, we offer service information together with our partners from the relevant specialist areas," said Professor Michael Roden, member of the board of the German Diabetes Center. The guide lists relevant (preventive) offerings and services by means of an interactive search on a local map. These can be filtered by type of service, distance or language.
The RIN Diabetes project was founded in 2014 at the German Diabetes Center as an inter- and transdisciplinary network. Currently, more than 60 partners are involved in the project, including diabetologists in private practice, self-help groups, health insurance companies, pharmacies, associations, companies from industry and research, hospitals and government offices. The aim of all partners is to reduce the number of diabetes cases in Düsseldorf and the surrounding area, to inform about new research approaches and treatment options for the disease, and to reduce the incidence of diabetes-related late complications such as nerve and organ damage. In addition, preventive projects in the area of child and youth work and in the company environment create an awareness of a balanced diet and sufficient exercise in everyday life.
The state of North Rhine-Westphalia will support the RIN Diabetes until 2020. In 2016, the project received the award "Place of Progress". For further information, please contact: http://rin-diabetes.de
