DIfE scientists investigate the relationships between diet and health in a combination of experimental, clinical and epidemiological research that is unique in Germany.
Their findings help to develop new strategies for the prevention and treatment of nutrition-related diseases as well as scientifically based dietary recommendations.
Research activities of the institute in 2015 and 2016 focused on:
- the causes and consequences of the metabolic syndrome, a combination of pathological overweight, hypertension, insulin resistance and a disturbed lipid metabolism
- the role of nutrition in healthy aging, also including important research findings on the potential of nutrition in preventing cancer
- the biological basis of food selection and dietary behavior
