New Review Study: Different Diets are Effective for Type 2 Diabetes

Researchers from the DZD partner German Diabetes Center in Düsseldorf have systematically investigated the influence of different diets and dietary factors on the management of type 2 diabetes and the prevention of complications for the first time in a comprehensive review. The study shows that the different diets - plant-based, Mediterranean, low-carbohydrate, high-protein - also have a positive effect on cardiometabolic health.

Under the lead of Edyta Szczerba and Dr. Sabrina Schlesinger, 312 meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were analyzed in an umbrella review. This showed that different nutritional approaches go far beyond mere energy regulation and can offer targeted benefits for people with type 2 diabetes. In addition to blood glucose control, these diets also have a positive effect on cardiometabolic health.

The study emphasizes the importance of a holistic approach to nutritional advice for people with type 2 diabetes, which not only focuses on weight management but also promotes a healthy lifestyle in the long term.
