During its virtual congress (May 12-15, 2021), the German Diabetes Society (DDG) will honor several scientists from the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD). The most prestigious award of the DDG, the Paul Langerhans Medal, will be conferred on Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Martin Hrabĕ de Angelis. 

The German Diabetes Society has been awarding the medal, named after the German pathologist Paul Langerhans, to top international researchers in diabetology since 1972. This year, DZD board member Martin Hrabĕ de Angelis is to receive the award in recognition of his excellent research achievements in the field of the genetic and epigenetic determinants of diabetes mellitus as well as for his outstanding accomplishments in founding and developing the German Center for Diabetes Research.  

The Ferdinand Bertram Prize will be awarded to Prof. Dr. Carolin Daniel of the DZD partner Helmholtz Zentrum München and Prof. Dr. Robert Wagner of the DZD partner Institute of Diabetes Research and Metabolic Diseases (IDM) in Tübingen. Daniel‘s research focuses on the causes and development of the autoimmune disease type 1 diabetes. In the Ferdinand Bertram Prize Lecture, she will speak about "Mechanisms of immune tolerance in type 1 diabetes in childhood". Wagner discovered that there are different subtypes of prediabetes which, among other things, have different levels of risk of complications. The topic of his Ferdinand Bertram Prize lecture is "The Diabetes Kaleidoscope: On the Way to Understanding the Risk of Complications". 

The Werner Creutzfeldt Prize will be awarded to DZD Board Member and Director of the German Diabetes Center Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Michael Roden.  

In addition, other DDG research prizes and awards will be presented to scientists of the DZD: 

• The Helmut Otto Medal will be awarded to DZD spokesperson Prof. Dr. Annette Schürmann (German Institute of Human Nutrition, DIfE) and Prof. Dr. Jochen Seuffert.   

• Professor Reinhard Holl, MD (University of Ulm) will receive the Ernst Friedrich Pfeiffer Prize.   

• Yanislava Karusheva, MD (German Diabetes Center, DDZ) has been selected to receive the DDG Sponsorship Award. 

The Paul Langerhans lecture and award ceremonies will take place during the virtual diabetes congress on May 14th starting at 2:30 p.m.  

In addition, the DDG supports projects that are particularly worthy of funding. Here, too, research projects from the DZD were successful: 

• The Adam Heller Project Grant will go to PD Olga Ramich, MD (DIfE). 

• The research by Dr. Sabine Kahl (DDZ) will be supported by the Hagedorn Project Grant. 

• Dr. Heike Vogel (DIfE) will be awarded with the Hellmut-Mehnert Project Grant. 

• The Menarini Project Grant will go to Martin Daniels (IDM). 

The German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD)  is one of six German Centers for Health Research.
