For his outstanding scientific achievements, Prof. Dr. Michael Roden, scientific director and executive board member of the German Diabetes Center (DDZ) and head  of the Department of Endocrinology and Diabetology at Düsseldorf University Hospital, was awarded honorary membership of the Hungarian Diabetes Association. An overview. 

At the beginning of September, the 29th Congress of the Hungarian Diabetes Association was held in Pécs. During this congress, Prof. Dr. Michael Roden, scientific director and executive board member of the German Diabetes Center (DDZ), as well as board member of the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) and head of the Department of Endocrinology and Diabetology at Düsseldorf University Hospital, was awarded honorary membership of the association. The award honors his services and achievements in the field of diabetes research. This is not the first time that the Hungarian Diabetes Association has honored Professor Roden, as he was already awarded the Somogyi Prize in 2014. "I am very pleased about this recognition by my Hungarian colleagues, which also underlines the long-standing cooperation of our center," said Professor Roden. 

From 2000 to 2005  Professor Roden was President of the Austrian Diabetes Association, and President of the Central European Diabetes Association (CEDA-FID) from 2009 to 2013, of which he is still a board member. Currently, he is also Chairman of the European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes (EFSD) of the European Diabetes Association. He also holds honorary doctorates from the Universities of Athens and Belgrade. Professor Roden is author or co-author of more than 600 scientific publications. His research areas include the study of energy metabolism in healthy people and in particular in people with diabetes and obesity (overweight). In recent years, one focus of his work has been on the function of mitochondria in muscle and liver, where he and his research group have shown how mitochondria can influence the development and progression of diabetes and NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease).

The Hungarian Diabetes Association was founded in 1970 with the aim of raising the standard of diabetes care in Hungary. In order to fulfill this task, the association, which now has 2685 members, coordinates and supports diabetes outpatient clinics in Hungary to this day and regularly offers continuing education courses to expand knowledge in the field of diabetology. 

The German Diabetes Center (DDZ) serves as the German reference center for diabetes. Its objective is to contribute to the improvement of prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment of diabetes mellitus. At the same time, the research center aims at improving the epidemiological data situation in Germany. The DDZ coordinates the multicenter German Diabetes Study and is a point of contact for all players in the health sector. In addition, it prepares scientific information on diabetes mellitus and makes it available to the public.
